Product description

Nominated* for seven Academy AwardsÂ(r) and winner for Best Director, this ground breaking and "wildly hilarious" (The Boston Globe) social satire launched the career of two-time OscarÂ(r)-winner** Dustin Hoffman and cemented the reputation of acclaimed director Mike Nichols. Pulsating with the rebellious spirit of the '60s and a haunting score sung by Simon and Garfunkel, The Graduate is truly a "landmark film" (Leonard Maltin). Shy Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) returns home from college with an uncertain future. Then the wife of his father's business partner, the sexy Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), seduces him, and the affair only deepens his confusion. That is, until he meets the girl of his dreams (Katharine Ross). But there's one problem: she's Mrs. Robinson's daughter!

Few films have defined a generation as The Graduate did. The alienation, the nonconformity, the intergenerational romance, the blissful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack--they all served to lob a cultural grenade smack into the middle of 1967 America, ultimately making the film the third most profitable up to that time. Seen from a later perspective, its radical chicness has dimmed a bit, yet it's still a joy to see Dustin Hoffman's bemused Benjamin and Anne Bancroft's deliciously decadent, sardonic Mrs. Robinson. The script by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham is still offbeat and dryly funny, and Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for his direction, has just the right, light touch. --Anne Hurley

Customer reviews

« Oldie, but Goodie. »
I saw "The Graduate" when it first came out in 1967. It was a wonderful movie and one of the first for Mike Nichols and Dustin Hoffman. Plus, it had the wonderful musical contribution of Simon and Garfunkle. Altogether, first rate! Well, I thought of it now and then when I heard the S & G songs on the radio, but that was about it. In any case, my wife and I were shopping at Ross and I spotted it on the DVD bargain shelves. I couldn't resist. My wife had never heard of it, but she was willing to go along with my word that she'd enjoy it. We both watched it last night and enjoyed it immensely. It's an exceptionally well done movie. Very funny. Emotional. A fun (and authentic) look back at the early 60s. We can watch this again and again. It's an oldie, but goodie.

« Every Viewing Is A Pleasure »
I attended a first-run screening at the Coronet Theatre in San Francisco. I still remember that the theatre was only half-filled with the audience.
That initial viewing was not particularly impressive although the music of Simon & Garfunkel was already popular at that period. The film was ahead of its time.
Many years went by I watched the film periodically and enjoyed it every time.
I also bought the dvd for my collection.
I bought this Blue Ray version to start my Blue Ray Disc collection.
I haven't view the disc yet since I need to buy a Blue Ray player first.
"The Graduate" is an all time classic.

« Great Blu-Ray »
For a nearly 30 year old movie, the transfer is amazing. Pick this up now.

« LOVE THIS MOVIE »
I love this movie for the hilarious deadpan performance of Dustin Hoffman. It's a crazy story, of course with a great soundtrack, that I love over and over.
