An Unlikely Love Triangle

Amos Lassen

Melissa Brooks realizes that she cannot afford college so she moves to New York City and takes a job as a waitress at a comedy club. She moves in with her brother, Robbie (Ivan Sandomire) and his "roommate" (boyfriend), Miller (Kane Manera). Robbie is a bit odd and Melissa soon finds herself involved in a very strange love triangle as she tries to get up the nerve to try her luck as a stand-up comic. Melissa (Christine Evangelista) is so pretty that she is not the usual type for stand-up.
A veteran comedian takes Melissa under his wing. He also owns Perlman's Comedy Club where she works. Melissa begins to take hints from other comics and she soon begins testing her material before tough crowds. Along with this is her strange love affair as well as dealing with events from her past.
I am not sure how to classify this film--I suppose dramatic comedy or dramedy is the best term I can use. Evangelista as Melissa shoes us both insecurity and sensuality in an excellent performance and she is well supported by the rest of the cast. The film charmed me and the ending is wonderful.
As Melissa becomes surer of herself, we watch her blossom and as she improves we root for her. She faces some obstacles, especially from jealous male comics but she has courage and determination, a sense of humor and great drive. We see what she is going through and we are happy that she succeeds. This is a perfect example of what a good indie film should be. Don't miss it.
